Spider-Man: Far From Home Will Make A Major Change To Mysterio’s Origin

While the rest of us will have to wait a little while longer to see the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, Collider’s own Steve Weintraub was in the audience at Comic-Con Experience Brazil to get a glimpse at the first footage. Here’s his rundown of what he saw:

When the trailer played I wasn’t expecting to have to write a recap/description because I’d been hearing Sony was going to release it online. On top of that, the CCXP crowd was screaming through half the trailer so I couldn’t hear a lot of dialogue.

From what I remember, the trailer begins with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) acting pretty happy and doing something with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and then Happy Hogan (Jon Faveau) appears and makes a comment about how May’s changed her outfit or hair. Tom Holland gives Happy a glance like, “what are you trying to do with my Aunt?”

There are these threats to the world. Elementals. Elemental creatures. And Mysterio is someone who knows about them, and wants to make sure the world is safe from them. And Nick Fury asks him to come on and help, because he’s the only one who really sort of understands them in a way. And then he teams up with friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and unfortunately, he has to make him more than just friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

That, naturally, is a drastic change from the comic, where Mysterio was one of the oldest, and most consistent, members of Spider-Man’s Rogues Gallery. The master of illusion burst on the scene in June 1964 as a failed special-effect wizard in the film industry. He figured he could use the tricks he had picked up in show business to commit crimes — and even frame Spider-Man.

It sounds like Spider-Man: Far From Home will stay away from that origin story for Mysterio, with the character being hired by Nick Fury to help Spider-Man battle something known as Elementals. So I suppose THEY are the villains of the sequel?

The Spider-Man: Far from Home panel began on a funny note with Jacob Batalon addressing the audience. He then received a call from Tom Holland, who told him that he was in Brazil. He then proceeded to essentially break into the panel. Holland, Gyllenhaal and Batalan went on to discuss the film to the huge audience of fans.
